Kanklės of the Baltic Sea nation have been systematized according to the division by A. Väisänen (1928), E. Arro (1931), Z. Slavinskas (1937), T. Leisiö (1975), H. Laitinen (1980), I. Priedite (1983) and A. Asplund (1983). The research of the exhibits at the Baltic museums showed that differently from the mentioned authors, who considered the most important features to be the method of production (hollowed or glued), the number of strings or even the size of kanklės, the shape of the body should be taken as the main index. The number of strings, even though it is significant feature, is not most important, besides it corresponds to the shape of the body.
